SLOAN, Iowa -- Lois D. Pope, 89, Sloan passed away Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at Pleasant View Care Center at Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Community Church of Christ in Sloan, with Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be in Sloan Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa. Lois was born Sept. 10, 1921, in Mangum, Okla., the daughter of Lancaster C. and Winnie Lee (Harris) Walters. She and her family lived in Oklahoma, Texas and later moved to California, where she graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School.

After graduation, Lois worked at a defense plant during World War II. She met her future husband, Howard Pope, in Las Vegas, Nev., where he was working. Lois and Howard were united in marriage on Jan. 2, 1947, in Reno, Nev. The couple moved to Sloan, where Howard engaged in farming and Lois cooked at Westwood School for 20 years. Howard passed away May 4, 1993, in Sloan.

Lois was a member of Community Church of Christ, where she was a longtime choir director and taught Sunday school. She was very active in the community and was a member of American Legion Smith-Rhodes Auxiliary Post 295 and past president of the Sloan Library. She was a very outgoing lady who loved her friends and neighbors and especially enjoyed gatherings at her bridge club.

Survivors include two sons, Robert and his wife, Marilyn Pope of Greensboro, N.C., and Richard Pope of Sloan; a grandson, Steven Pope; two sisters, Donna Lee and her husband, Verne Flock of Boise, Idaho, and Nell and her husband, Ed Taylor of Hood River, Ore.; and two sisters-in-law, Donna Jean Walters of Prescott, Ariz., and Evelyn Pope of Fresno, Calif.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Wilma; and a brother, Carl Walters.
