SIOUX CITY -- Betty A. Ehlers, 88, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Spirit Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis W. Meinen, Chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Navy Reserve. Visitation with the family present will be 9:30 a.m. until service time at the Holy Spirit Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent to christysmith.com.

Betty was born on Dec. 25, 1921, in Sioux City, to William and Hazel (Brennan) Ehlers. She graduated from Central High School in 1940 and from Morningside College in 1953. She served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1944. Betty taught school in Huron, S.D. , then taught for nine years at Winnebago, Neb., and one year in Jackson, Neb. She retired from the South Sioux City, Nebraska School System in 1975. She lived most of her life in Sioux City.

She belonged to the Nebraska State Education Association for over 40 years and was a member of the National Education Association. She was a former member of American Legion, Monahan Post 64 of Sioux City.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Ruby Ehlers of Sioux City; nephews, Ronnie, Gary and Mike Ehlers; a niece, Sharon La Fleur; and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert J. Ehlers Sr. and William B. Ehlers; two nephews, Robert J. Ehlers Jr. and Larry W. Ehlers; and two great nieces, Lisa Marie Ehlers and Betty Ann La Fleur.
