PIERSON, Iowa -- Arthur "Art" F. Grabe, 85, of Pierson passed away Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Salem Lutheran Church in rural Correctionville, Iowa, with Bert Burwell A.i.M officiating. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rohde Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.

Art was born Dec. 4, 1925, in rural Pierson, to Fred and Emma (Herbold) Grabe. He grew up on the family farm west of Pierson and started farming at the age of 14 after his father passed away. Art graduated from Pierson High School in 1943.

On July 6, 1950, he was married to La Dona Rimmer at Salem Lutheran Church. To this union three children were born, Bradley, Jill and Mikel. La Dona passed away Dec. 2, 1994. Art later married Maroldine Armstrong on June 20, 1998, at Salem Lutheran Church. Art lived on the family farm his entire life. He loved farming and retired from it in 2008.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Kingsley and Pierson Co-ops, and Woodbury County REC. Art umpired Kingsley-Pierson baseball and softball for many, many years and was also involved with the chain gang for football games. He received the Distinguished Service Award and was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Iowa Football Coaches Association in 1992.

Art is survived by his wife, Maroldine; his children, Bradley (Deanna) of Barnesville, Minn., Jill Gollhofer and Doug Willert of Ellendale, Minn., and Mikel (Julie) of Kingsley, Iowa; stepsons, Robert (Christine) Armstrong and Todd (Misty) Armstrong; brothers-in-law, Burdette Bogenrief, Ken (Hope) Rimmer and Arlo Grubb; sister-in-law, Maxine Meister; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, La Dona; a brother, Elvin; and sisters, Edna Knaack and Evelyn Bogenrief.
