SIOUX CITY -- Edith C. "Edie" Grimes, 86, Sioux City died Saturday, June 12, 2010, at a Sergeant Bluff nursing home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. The Rev. Tony Nestor of Grace United Methodist will officiate. Burial will be Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday.

Edith was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Yankton, S.D., the daughter of Raymon and Hazel (Syverud) Schmelzel. She was raised and attended school in Yankton.

On Nov. 16, 1942, she married James "Al" Grimes in South Sioux City. The couple served as care takers for Camp Kellogg Boy Scout Camp in Sioux City and then at the Thomas Ashford Scout Camp in Homer, Neb. They also worked as custodians for the O'Connor House near Homer, conducting tours and showing the home to school children. Al died on April 8, 1980, in Homer. Edith lived in Yankton, Sioux City, North Sioux City, Homer, and returned to Sioux City in 1980.

Edith was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church. She served as a senior companion and did foster care. She also did day care for many years. She was very active in Scouts, serving as a den mother and working with other Scout leaders and going through several training camps.

She is survived by her three sons, Ray Grimes of Jacksonville, Fla., Charles (Jody) Grimes of Sioux City, David (Jeanie) of McCook Lake, S.D.; a stepson, Robert and his wife, Mary Ann of Biloxi, Miss.; daughter-in-law, Donna Grimes of Kimmel, Ind.; two sisters, Vivian Barber of Lakewood, Colo., Marguerite Guthmiller of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 16 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Gary; a stepson, James; her half brother, Clinton Ray; a stepdaughter, Donna Fetterman; and a daughter-in-law, Barb.
