SIOUX CITY -- Barbara Jane Ackerman, 72, of Sioux City died Friday, June 4, 2010, at her residence, following complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with Pastor Kevin Lee officiating. Private graveside services will be in Westlawn-Hillcrest Memorial Park in Omaha, Neb. Visitation with the family present will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Avenue. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Barbara was born Feb. 28, 1938, in Seward, Neb., the daughter of Robert and Wilma (Engler) Brunell. She attended Corrigan Grade School and Omaha South High School. She graduated with a BA degree from the University of Nebraska in Omaha, and attended graduate school at the University of South Dakota. She married Kenneth L. Ackerman on June 25, 1960, in Omaha.

Barbara was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church, PEO Chapter DX, AAUW, and she served on the Sioux City Library Board. She did volunteer work at the June E. Nylen Cancer Center and did literary work at the Sioux City Schools.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth of Sioux City; two sons, Brock Ackerman and his wife, Shelly, and Kory Ackerman and his wife, Missy, all of Sioux City; a daughter, Kyle Lynn Tipton and her husband, Matt of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Adam and Megan Ackerman and Ethan Tipton; and a sister, Marilyn Curran and her husband, Jack of Bella Vista, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bill Brunell; sister-in-law, Karen Ackerman; and her grandparents.

Pallbearers will be Ken, Brock and Kory Ackerman, Matt Tipton, Adam Ackerman and Nick Topf.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland or Morningside Lutheran Church Youth Group.
