SIOUX CITY -- William M. Gill, 87, of Leawood, Kan., formerly of Sioux City and McCook Lake, S.D., died Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at an Overland Park, Kan., hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson, S.D., with the Rev. David Roehrich officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a rosary at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Bill was born July 11, 1923, in Homer, Neb., the son of William and Merle (Sater) Gill. He grew up in Morningside and graduated from East High School in 1941. He enlisted on Dec. 24, 1943, with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served with the 816th Bomber Squadron. He was station in Italy and was discharged on Oct. 21, 1945.

Bill married Dorothy Wellenstien on May 28, 1955. Bill worked in sales all of his life for various businesses in Sioux City.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Morningside Country Club before moving to McCook Lake. He then became a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Jefferson. He enjoyed golfing and bowling at Park Bowl. He was active with the McCook Lake Chapter of the Isaac Walton League and the McCook Lake Recreation Association.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Leawood, Kan.; a daughter, Frances Hurley-Doherty and her husband, Tom of Leawood; two sons, Clem Hurley of Topeka, Kan., and Ed Wellenstien of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Diane Ellingson and her husband, Rob of Baker, Ore.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Gill of Lincoln, Neb.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Vernon; and a sister, Geraldine Nelson.
