CUSHING, Iowa -- Florence E. Dreeszen, 94, of Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Cushing, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at the Gardens Assisted Living Retirement Community of Cherokee.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church of Cushing, with the Rev. Bev Wolff officiating. Burial will be in the Cushing Cemetery of Cushing. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service starting at noon at the church. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the arrangements.

Florence E. Dreeszen was born on Feb. 22, 1916, in Rock Township Woodbury County to Henry and Alma Volkert. She was confirmed on July 21, 1929 at St. John's Lutheran Church of Cushing. Her confirmation verse was Colossians 3:17. She attended Cushing schools from 1st grade through 12th grade. She worked for a local doctor doing housework, then moved to Illinois to care for a family, watching their young children and doing housework. She then moved back to Iowa.

On Nov. 8, 1942, she married Wesley Dreeszen. The couple was blessed with a son, George Wesley who was the joy of their lives.

Florence loved to garden and can her vegetables, which she would enter into the Ida County Fair. She also entered raw vegetables, flowers and handmade clothes, which she received many ribbons for. In 1963 she wrote family tree albums for both the Volkert and Hummel families.

In 1989, the couple moved off the farm into Holstein, where she continued her gardening and had beautiful flowers. In 2005, she and Wesley moved to Char-Mac in Holstein to assisted living. In 2008 they moved to Cherokee. Florence moved into The Gardens assisted living, while Wesley needed to go to the Country Side Estates nursing home following a heart attack. On Jan. 5, 2009, her husband of 66 years passed away.

She is survived by three granddaughters, Melissa Young of Nancy, Ky., Michele Bibby of Crestline, Calif., and Melinda Brown of Maricopa, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Travis and Samantha Chase, Taylor and Andrew Bibby, and Ashley, Victoria, Ty and Jordan Brown; a sister-in-law, Velma Goettsch of Holstein, Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, Emmet and Lois Dreeszen of Ames, Iowa; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son and daughter-in-law, George and Sharon Dreeszen; and brothers, Fred, Walter and Wesley (Bud); and sisters and brother-in-law, Wilma, Ardis and Larry (Buck).
