SIOUX CITY -- DeWayne L. "Big D" Miller, 88, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, in Sioux City.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Russell Senstad officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery, Lawton, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to time of service Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

DeWayne was born on Aug. 3, 1922, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Otto and Anna (Christiansen) Miller. DeWayne served during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the 63rd Infantry Division, first in the U.S. Army and later transferred into the newly formed Air Force. He received the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with the Bronze Service Star, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal during his military life.

DeWayne was married to Dorothy Steinky on Sept. 13, 1944. She died from cancer in 1968. Later, he was married to Phyllis A. Bachert in Sioux City. They later divorced.

DeWayne was in construction and owned Miller Building. He built many homes in the Sioux City area. DeWayne enjoyed his work building and also enjoyed traveling with his family, gardening, cooking and when he was at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations, playing pool and dancing with his special friend, Marlene Stilwell. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

DeWayne is survived by his sons, Dennis Miller and his wife, Cindy of Homer, La., and Dean Miller and his wife, Bethany of Wayne, Neb.; daughters, Connie Miller of Sioux City, and Donette and her husband, Tom Spring of Simi Valley, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Todd, Joshua, Clint, Sadie, Tommy, Joah and Kalab; one great-granddaughter, Reilly; his sister, Violet Kerling of Austin, Minn.; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gerald and Leonard Miller.
