SIOUX CITY -- Delbert "Pete" Erwin Breland, 84, of Sioux City died on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at his residence.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Third Presbyterian Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. David Choate officiating. Following the services, military rites will be offered by the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Breland will be cremated following the funeral service. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Waterbury Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. Delbert was born on May 3, 1926, in Washington Springs, S.D., the son of Bert and Rachel Breland. He moved to Sioux City at age 10 and had lived here since that time. He graduated from Central High School with the class of 1944.

Upon his graduation, Delbert served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Marines. Following his military service, he worked as a plumber for J.P. Olson and Hagin and Company until retiring at age 57. He then worked as a building engineer at the Benson building until retiring in 2009. He also shared his knowledge by teaching plumbing and heating at Purdue University.

Delbert was united in marriage with Margaret James on June 26, 1976, at Third Presbyterian Church.

He was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 3. Delbert enjoyed playing golf and was a former member of the city golf league. He also enjoyed watching western programs and movies. The time he could spend with all of his family was precious to him.

Delbert is survived by his wife of 34 years, Margaret; his son, Relton Breland of California; his daughter, Kathy Rodriguez (Martin) of California; his stepsons, Jim James of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Paul James of Oklahoma. He is also survived by two sisters, Vivian Fox of Sioux City, and Violet Diehl (George) of St. George, Utah; and his four grandchildren, Angela Rodriguez, Mary Catherine Rodriguez, Sunnie Ludwigs and Miles Ludwigs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and stepdaughter, Lori Ludwigs.
