24 June 2010SIOUX CITY -- Pauline Mary Sherman, 94, of Sioux City passed away Monday, June 21, 2010, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., following a brief illness.
Services will be 10:45 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Retirement Home, with the Rev. Dennis Meinen officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, 822 Jennings St., Sioux City.
Pauline was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Grant Township, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph Francis and Myrtle Margaret (Gallup) O'Meara. She graduated from Oto (Iowa) High School in 1934. She received her teaching certificate and taught at Fairplay School and the Living Spring School outside of Oto. In 1942, she moved to California and attended college at night and worked as an operator for AT&T during the day.
She married Bob Sherman on Oct. 24, 1958, in Los Angeles, Calif. After their marriage, they moved to Parker, Ariz., where she attended college. After Bob passed away in 1968, she moved back to Burbank, Calif. She recently moved back to Sioux City in March 2007.
She was an accomplished writer. She loved to write children's books, short stories and recently finished a novel. She also liked to paint and read. She was extremely smart and loved learning new things.
Survivors include her brother, Vernon O'Meara of Sioux City; a sister, Maxine Miller of Sioux City; nieces, Susan O'Meara, Maggie and her husband, Larry Locke and Kathleen Middaugh, all of Sioux City; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Thomas O'Meara; and a nephew, Gerald Francis Bowman.
