SIOUX CITY -- Carol Irene Johnson, 88, of Sioux City, formerly of Bronson, Iowa, died Friday, May 14, 2010, at a local care facility.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, Iowa, with Lorna Peters, chaplain of Hospice of Siouxland, officiating. Interment will follow in Arlington Township Cemetery at Moville, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Carol was born May 27, 1921, in Bronson, Iowa, the daughter of Reed and Cathryn Maude (Onstot) Padel. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Lawton, where she grew up. She was united in marriage with Armin Bolton Johnson on Dec. 25, 1941, in Ponca, Neb. Armin died on Sept. 23, 1992, in Sioux City.

Carol taught in the Woodbury County country schools following her marriage. She also taught at Woodbury Central High School until 1954, when she retired from teaching to raise her children. After raising her children, Carol worked for Hanson Glass & Paint, Wilson Trailer Company and then worked for Penn Life for several years before retiring in 1986.

Carol was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the church circle. She also was a former member of the Lawton Senior Center, the Lawton Garden Club, the Lawton American Legion Auxiliary and the Moose Lodge. Carol was a loving mother who enjoyed the times she spent with her entire family. She enjoyed all the wonderful times she spent with her family and friends at gatherings and celebrations. Carol also enjoyed spending time reading, gardening and raising flowers. She was always a pleasant lady.

Carol will be missed by her family which includes her sons, Terrance (Sandra) of Lawton, Donald (Janice) of Long Grove, Iowa, and Reed (Joyce) of Portales, N.M.; her daughters, Constance Dyson (Vernon) of Sioux City, and Geraldine Phillips (Thomas) of Sioux City. She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren; her 50 great-grandchildren; and her four great-great-grandchildren.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Carol's family requests that memorials in her name be made to Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton.
