SIOUX CITY -- Douglas L. Dickson, 55, of Sioux City, passed away after a short battle with cancer Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at a local care facility.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Trimble United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Douglas was born Oct. 11, 1954, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Kathy (Goss) Dickson. He attended school at West High in Sioux City, then enlisted in the Army in 1973. He was stationed in Indo-China. After his honorable discharge in 1976, he returned to Sioux City and worked construction.

On Sept. 3, 1988, he was united in marriage to Dona Shoop in Sioux City. He attended Western Iowa Tech Community College and was a substitute instructor in the building engineer department. Doug worked for a time with the Sioux City Public School District in building maintenance and later during the 1990s for KCAU. He was most recently employed at the Clairon Hotel until October 2009 due to health.

Doug enjoyed fishing, playing the guitar, bowling and horseshoe throwing. He was a die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan.

Doug is survived by his lifelong companion, Dona Dickson; his mother, Kathy Walker of Dakota City; one son, Nathan Dickson of Sioux City; one daughter, Heather Avitia of California; two stepchildren, Carrie Clodous of Des Moines and Franklin Rask of Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; three brothers, Nels Reynolds and his wife, Toni of Sioux City, Frank Nimmer of Elk Point, S.D., and Danny Uhl of San Diego, Calif.; and three sisters, Phyllis Reynolds of Sioux Falls, S.D., Deborah Anderson of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Rebecca Strom of Tucson, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Aerial Dickson; and one brother, Tim Uhl.
