SIOUX CITY -- Kathryn Marie "Kay" Nutt, 96, of Sioux City passed away Friday, April 30, 2010, at North Park Senior Living.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Per her wishes, Mrs. Nutt has been cremated. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Nutt was born Sept. 2, 1913, on a farm near Moorhead, Iowa, the daughter of Thorvald and Martina Nielsen, immigrants from Denmark. She was baptized and confirmed in the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Moorhead. In 1925, she moved with her family to Castana, Iowa, where she graduated from high school. She attended the University of Northern Iowa, at that time known as Iowa State Teacher's College. She taught several years in rural schools in Monona County, Iowa, and in Red Rock. She also taught evening classes in Knoxville, Iowa, and during World War II taught adult classes in Mapleton, Iowa, on preparing "meatless meals."

She married William Nutt on June 11, 1938, in Moorhead, Iowa. To this union two sons were born, Ronald William and Richard Lee.

Mrs. Nutt spent 18 years as office manager and later as vice president in charge of operations at Home Federal Savings and Loan of Sioux City. She became well known nationwide for her appearances at state and national conventions, speaking on the subject of personnel selection, training, and motivation. In the early 1960s, she had the honor of being the first woman asked to speak at a National Savings and Loan Convention. She retired from Home Federal in 1973.

Mrs. Nutt served on various boards including the Art Center, the Concert Course, the Sioux City Chamber of Commerce, the Y.W.C.A. and later on the advisory board of the Y.W.C.A. She served on the board of Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, and on the continuing education committee of Briar Cliff College. She also served on the finance committee of the Girl Scouts and on the advisory committee of the United Way. She was chairman of the founding committee of the Good Samaritan Club at St. Luke's Hospital and served on the founding board of directors of the Siouxland Foundation.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and a member of Chapter HZ of the PEO. She was a member of the Ladies Golf Association of the Sioux City Country Club, where she served as both president and treasurer. She loved playing golf and was and avid bridge player. Among her hobbies were baking and candy making. She loved to entertain.

She was the author of two cookbooks. One, "Happiness Is," dedicated to her grandchildren and "Grandma Kay's Favorites," dedicated to her great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her two sons, Ronald and wife, Dee of Sioux City, and Richard of Elk Point, S.D.; six grandchildren, Laurie Muder and husband, Chris of Lawrence, Kan., Lianne Sennott and husband, Tim of Naperville, Ill., William "Beau" Nutt of Austin, Texas, Sarah Nutt of Bemidji, Minn., Molly Schumacher and husband, Paul of Monticello, Minn., and Ron Nutt II and wife, Melissa of Sioux City; 13 great-grandchildren, Sean and Chase Muder, Kyle, T.J. and Austin Sennott, Katie and Jackson Nutt, Alyssa Nutt, Ryan, Catrena and Luke Schumacher, and Joshua and Calib Nutt.

Mrs. Nutt was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers; and one sister.

Memorials have been established in her name with First Lutheran Church of Sioux City and the Siouxland Foundation.
