SIOUX CITY -- Seth Ryan Modlin, 31, of Sioux City, known to his family and friends as Sethy, fought a long battle with cerebral palsy and passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at a Sioux City hospital. He was a true fighter in every sense of the word and an inspiration to anyone who had the good fortune of knowing or caring for him.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Church of the Nativity, with the Rev. Gerald Feierfeil officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Condolences may be sent online to meyerbroschapels.com.

Seth was born July 20, 1978, in Sioux City, to Galen and Charmaine (Gabrielli) Modlin.

His spirit, determination and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His courage was immeasurable and has touched the lives of many.

He attended Nativity Catholic Church.

Survivors include his very loving father, Galen Modlin and his wife, Denice and their daughter, Miranda Mercer, all of Hornick, Iowa; his sister and brother-in-law, Tisha and James Wilson and niece, Sophie Wilson, all of Chicago, Ill.; his maternal grandmother, Lois Gabrielli of Sioux City; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Seth is also survived by his friends and caretakers at Courage Homes, who cannot be thanked enough for the love and quality of care they provided. A special thank you to Dr. Michael Jung for his many years of medical care and support.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Charmaine, whose unconditional love gave him strength and comfort; his maternal grandfather, Joseph Gabrielli; and paternal grandparents, Jean and Adolph Modlin.

Pallbearers will be Ron Kerr, Dale Wigg, Darin Winfree, James Wilson, Ron Wood and Arvin Daniels. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenny Modlin, Joseph Gabrielli, Guy Gabrielli and Joseph Haag.
