SIOUX CITY -- Eleanor B. (Severson) Clemon, 88, of Sioux City died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at a local medical center. She was a resident of Countryside.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, 6200 Morningside Ave. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

Eleanor was born July 1, 1921, in Soldier, Iowa, to Walter and Grace (Lehmberg) Severson. She attended school in Onawa, Iowa, and Soldier. She was class president and valedictorian of Soldier High School senior class of 1938. She attended normal school and Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., receiving her teacher's certificate. She taught at a small school in rural Monona County, Iowa.

On June 23, 1944, Eleanor married Lyle W. Clemon in Soldier. They had four children, Gary, Carol, Warren and Neal. She later graduated from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City with a bachelor of arts degree on July 21, 1967. She taught second grade at the Salix (Iowa) Elementary School, Westwood School District, for many years until she retired.

During her teaching career, she was an active member of the Iowa Education Association. She also was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa, International Honorary Organization for Women Educators. After retirement, she taught English as a Second Language (ESL) classes in Sioux City. She very much enjoyed teaching these classes. She is a past president of the American Legion Monanhan Post Auxiliary in Sioux City. One of the duties she particularly enjoyed in that position was presenting the American flag to new citizens on the United States, many of whom were her former ESL pupils. She also enjoyed presenting the Girls State awards to local high school girls.

She loved to teach, read and travel, seeing most of the United States and much of Canada and Europe. She loved sports and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was active in politics and was a poll worker for many elections.

She is survived by her sister, Joan (Pearson) Mecom; her children, Gary (wife, Dianne Anderson) Clemon, Carol (husband, James) Sanders, Warren (wife, Debbie Clark) and Neal; her grandchildren, Jennifer, Jeffrey, Jason, Benjamin, Robert, Aaron, Stephen, Lisa and Robyn; and her great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Georgia Humbert; a granddaughter, Julie; and a grandson, Mathew.

Eleanor was loved and will be greatly missed.
