SIOUX CITY -- Ernest J. "Ernie" Weiland, 88, of Sioux City died Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church with the Rev. Brent Lingle officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., a rosary recited by the family at 6:30 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel.

Ernie was born Nov. 2, 1921, in Scotland, S.D., the son of John and Emma (Kozel) Weiland. He lost both of his parents at a young age. Ernie graduated from Scotland High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 5, 1942. He served as a decorated sergeant in World War II with the Gas Supply Company 5th Combat Engineers Special Brigade, which took an active part in the invasion of Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day. He was awarded several medals for distinguished service.

After the war, Ernie came to Sioux City where he met and married Betty Kingsbury on Aug. 30, 1947, at the Cathedral of the Epiphany. They were blessed with two sons, Jack and Jeff.

Betty and Ernie owned a Coast to Coast Store and bowling Alley in Parkston, S.D., in the 1960s. After returning to Sioux City in the 1970s, he worked as a salesman at JCPenney's and later at Morey and Raymond's Clothing Store.

Ernie was a member of the Church of the Nativity and American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of Sioux City; a son, Jeff Weiland and Peggy of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Adele Weiland of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Brett Weiland and Christa, Stephanie Schramm and Seth, Barry Weiland and Kristi, Jason Weiland and Haley, Lisa Bernard and Adam and Heath Weiland; 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son Jack.

Pallbearers will be Ernie's grandchildren, Brett Weiland, Stephanie Schramm, Barry Weiland, Jason Weiland, Lisa Bernard and Heath Weiland.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
