SIOUX CITY -- Alvin L. Harder, 72, of Sioux City passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, while camping in Custer, S.D.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Following services, his body will be cremated, and his cremains will be buried in Calvary Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2010. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Alvin was born on May 13, 1938, in Ponca, Neb., to Raymond and Lois (Martinsen) Harder. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and the Seabees.

He was married to Cleo Bauman on Nov. 21, 1959, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Newcastle, Neb. Al was a supervisor of maintenance for IBP and later for Great West Casualty from where he retired.

He is fondly remembered for his love of tinkering and reconstructing motors; his family called him the "Dr. of Mechanics." He enjoyed riding his Harley and he was an avid golfer. Al was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Isaak Walton League in McCook Lake, S.D., the Eagles Club of South Sioux City, and Sun Valley Golf Course.

Al is survived by his wife, Cleo Harder of Sioux City; his five children, daughter Roberta (Gabe) Cabrera of Pharr, Texas; three sons Philip (Pam) Harder of Marion, Iowa, Douglas Harder of Amarillo, Texas, and Matthew (Wendy) Harder of South Sioux City; and a daughter Jennifer (Barry) Shupe of Sioux City; grandchildren Michael Harder, Dante Faulkner, Elizabeth Harder, Ashton Harder, Megan Wyland, Shelby Harder, Lauren Cabrera, Chloe Huck, Andrew Cabrera, Cole Modlin, Steven Shupe and Olivia Shupe; one great-granddaughter Rylee Harder; brother Robert (Janyce) Harder of South Sioux City; sister Lana (Bob) Kastning of Ponca, Neb.; sister-in-law Betty Stark of Ponca; and two brothers-in-law Allan (Lavonne) Bauman of Newcastle, Neb., and Rodney (Judi) Bauman of Ponca.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers Raymond Jr. and Jerry Harder.
