SIOUX CITY -- Mildred Lantis, longtime resident of Sioux City, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, July 23, 2010, at Lake View Care Center in Bigfork, Montana.

Visitation will be at Meyer Brothers Funeral Home, 3220 Stone Park Blvd., on Friday, Aug. 6, from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 612 Jennings St., Saturday, Aug. 7, at 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Interment at Memorial Park Cemetery will follow the luncheon.

The daughter of Charles and Emma (Wieting) Maschmeier, Mildred was born Nov. 19, 1913, near Ellis, Neb. The oldest of eight children, she was raised on a farm and educated in nearby Beatrice, Neb., and moved to Sioux City in 1931. She married Merl E. Lantis at Emmaus Lutheran Church in 1934. The same church was built by her father and his family, southwest of Beatrice. This strong German/Lutheran heritage was a great influence in Mildred's Christian faith. She cited her confirmation in both English and German just for her Grandma, who could only speak German.

Mildred was very proud her whole family is of the Christian faith and daily prayers at meals and bedtime were never missed. She strongly believed in her life with Christ on earth and after death. "Be thou faithful until death and I will give you a crown of Life." (Revelations 2:10)

Mildred and Merl settled in Sioux City and were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City since 1933. She was a member of Lydia Circle, St. Paul's Ladies Aid, Quilting Club and Mature Citizens. She was famous for her cooking contributions to St. Paul's and remembered by generations for her wonderful Swiss steak dinners.

Many will remember Mildred and Merl as owners and operators of Ted's Cafe in Riverside, a famous gathering place for homemade meals, socializing and friendship. Mildred's specialties were her apple pies, fried chicken, loose meat sandwiches and German peppernuts. Later Mildred owned and operated the A&W in Vermillion, S.D., which was the favorite hangout of students and the most desired place to work. Millie had a special way of making everyone feel like family. Mildred and Merl opened their door and hearts to so many young people who considered them their adopted family. They also started a fireworks business which two of their sons carry on today known as Lantis Fireworks.

Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Emma Maschmeier; and siblings: Lawrence Maschmeier, Hertha Larson, Marion Haller, Edna Maschmeier, Viola Worden, Darlene Pashal and Elinor Lang; husband, Merl Edward Lantis; and son, William Edward Lantis.

She is survived by sons, Bob Lantis (Julie) of Rapid City, S.D., Don Lantis (Reta) of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Ken Lantis (Christine) of Sandy, Utah; daughter, Margie Lantis Bagley of Bigfork, Mont.; daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Lantis of Spearfish, S.D.; brothers-in-law, George Lang and Dick Worden; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
