SIOUX CITY -- Helen J. Adamowicz, 91, formerly of Sioux City died April 21, 2010, in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada, following a period of failing health.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sioux City.

Helen was a longtime resident of Sioux City. She was the wife of Stephen T. Adamowicz, who preceded her in death in 1987.

Helen enjoyed a long, active life both working and raising four children. She worked at Armour's Plant and ran a neighborhood grocery store with her husband. She was an executive secretary at Zenith and was a secretary and accountant at Boyer's Meat Plant in Gordon, Neb., before her retirement.

She was a longtime sports fan and participated playing varsity basketball at East High School, where she graduated with honors in 1936. She excelled at bowling and golf in her later years and was a lifelong Cubs fan.

She was famous for her Polish cooking and passed her wonderful recipes on to family members. She was an expert seamstress, crocheter and knitter. She learned to quilt in her last years.

She was a longtime member of the former St. Francis Church in Morningside, where she was a member of the choir and the rosary society.

Survivors include her daughter, Stephanie Bereson of Rockaway Beach, Ore.; sons, Michael (Linda) Adamowicz of Lombard, Ill., and Stephen J. (Carol) Adamowicz of St. Andrews, New Brunswick; a brother, Julian (Mae) Dziurawiec of Raymore, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and her loving cousin, Irene Stevens of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Dziurawiec; sisters, Genevieve Stevens and Alice McKnight; a daughter, Celestine James; and a great-grandson, Caleb.
