SLOAN, Iowa -- Lorraine M. Watson, 92, a longtime resident of Sloan, died Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at the Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa after a brief illness of Lymphoma B.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane and Monsignor Mark Duchaine as co-celebrants. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Lorraine was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Salix, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Blendena (Johnson) Hubert. She graduated in 1937 from Sloan High School. Lorraine then graduated from a hair styling school in Sioux City, and worked for a few years as a beautician.

On June 8, 1939, Lorraine was united in marriage to L.T. "Gus" Watson in Sioux City. They lived for two years in Ottumwa, Iowa, while Gus was serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. They returned to Sloan, where she partnered with Gus and worked at their Watson Locker Service. After 30 years, they retired in the late 1970s.

Lorraine's life revolved around her family. She was a woman of great faith. Lorraine was known for her hugs and firm handshakes. Her children recall her outgoing personality and high energy; their nickname for her was "The Energizer Bunny". She always told the kids to "put your smile on and take care of each other". Lorraine's love and devotion to her husband Gus was her rock in life.

Lorraine was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Tabernacle Society, T.O.P.S. and the America Legion Auxiliary.

Lorraine is survived by her husband of more than 71 years, Gus; her sons, Steve Watson and his wife Beverly of Boston, Mass., and Rick Watson of Sloan; her daughters, Karla and her husband Kris Maynard of Indianapolis, Ind., and Carol and her husband Dr. Garry Clark of Sergeant Bluff; eight grandchildren, Amy Derrick, Jason Claus, Joshua Maynard, Jill VanderSchaaf, Paul Watson, Neil Maynard, Rajean Maynard and Andrea Matney; eight great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren; a one brother, Albert Hubert and his wife Kathy of Salix; and a brother-in-law, Kermit Lee of Sloan.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Rosanna Schellinger, Corinne Goodwin and Lucille Lee; two brothers, Roger Hubert and Dick Hubert; two daughters-in-law; and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made in her memory to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix or the Sloan Public Library building fund.
