Smithland, Iowa—Gilbert E. Fey, 74, of Smithland died Thursday, October 21, 1999 at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oto, Iowa, with the Revs. Edmund Tiedeman, and David Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa, with military honors provided by American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 0666 of Smithland. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Visitation will resume at the church on Monday at noon, until service time.

Mr. Fey was born March 30, 1925, at Moville, Iowa, the son of Carl F. and Florence (Gaffey) Fey. He grew up in Moville and graduated from Moville High School in 1943.

He served in the United States Army from May 24, 1945, until his honorable discharge on October 30, 1946.

He married Margaret Dahlhoff on March 24, 1948, in Ida Grove, Iowa. He then managed a farm north of Cherokee, Iowa. In 1954, they moved to Sloan, Iowa, where he worked as a salesman for John Deere Implement. In 1984, they moved to Connecticut where he dispatched for a trucking firm until his retirement in 1990, when they moved to Smithland.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oto. He was also a member of American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 0666 of Smithland.

He enjoyed cooking, collecting recipes and gardening.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Michelle and John Bainbridge of Smithland; a son, Michael Fey of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two grandchildren; Jennifer and Christopher; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Palma Campbell of Imboden, Ark; a brother and his wife, Wayne and Lorraine Fey of Battle Creek, Iowa; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Donald Fey.
