8 April 2000Smithland, Iowa—John Clare Yockey, 86, of Smithland died Monday, April 3, 2000 at a Columbus, Ohio hospital.
Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Scott Fiege officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton.
Mr. Yockey was born October 17, 1913, near Smithland, the son of John and Flora (White) Yockey. He attended school in Smithland until 1930.
He married Lorene Scheer in September 1940. During the 1930s, he was employed in the trucking industry. From the early 1940s until 1968 the couple farmed in the Hornick and Charter Oak, Iowa area. They then moved to the Smithland area where they farmed. They retired from farming in 1978 and moved into Smithland. His wife died May 31, 1987. In 1994 he entered Maple Heights assisted living facility in Mapleton. He moved to Columbus, Ohio in January 2000.
He was a member of St Matthew Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, camping and fishing.
He served as mayor of Smithland in the 1980s and as president of the Rodney Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Marleen McCage of Columbus and Carolyn and her husband, Darrell “Ed” Carr of Hornick; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter, Virginia Petersen.
Memorials may be directed to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Atonement Lutheran Church in Columbus, LifeCare Alliance Home Health Agency in Columbus and Dakota Boys Ranch.
