Carl Andrew Peterson, 90, of Mapleton, Iowa died February 25, 1998 at Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.

Carl Peterson was born April 2, 1907, at Smithland, Iowa, the son of John and Mary Kathryn (Chilton) Peterson. He serviced his country in the United States Army during World War II. On August 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Helen Marie Hjort in Brainerd, Minnesota. The couple farmed in the Hornick, Iowa area and moved to Mapleton, Iowa in 1987. Helen died August 9, 1996.

Carl was a member of the American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 0666 of Smithland for over 50 years.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include one daughter and her husband, Bonnie and James T Moran of McCook Lake, South Dakota, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren along with other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Along with his wife, Carl was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Richard, seven brothers, Harry, LeRoy, Jay, Lester, Johnnie, Clifford and Leonard and four sisters, Sylvia McLarty, Nettie Carlson, Edith Erlandson and Helen Hayden.

Funeral services were held March 2, 1998, 10:30 a.m. at the Smithland United Methodist Church, Smithland, Iowa, with Pastor Karen Handke officiating. The message in Music with Pat Madsen, organist, was “One Day At A Time” and “In The Garden”.

Pallbearers were Michael Moran, Patrick Moran, Daniel Moran, Robert Scott, Bruce Parker and Norman Parker. Military Honors were held by the American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 0666 of Smithland, Iowa.
Interment was in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa. Arrangements were by Armstrong Funeral Service, Grant and Cindy Armstrong.
