Smithland, Iowa—William J Folkers, 78, of Smithland died Thursday, October 30, 1997 at a SIoux City hospital of multiple myeloma.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Smithland, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa.

Mr. Folkers was born October 5, 1919, in Randolph, Nebr., the son of William and Theodora (Thompson) Folkers. He served in the US Army during World War II in France and Germany. Upon returning he farmed near Smithland.

He married Ellna Francis Cory on May 16, 1950, in Smithland. He was also employed with Brower Construction, Midwest Construction and Co-op Lumber in Hornick, Iowa. The couple moved to Onawa in 1974, where he was employed with Great Plains Lumber and as a self-employed carpenter. She died September 7, 1991, in Onawa.

He married June Shattuck on September 3, 1995, in Smithland. The couple made their home in Smithland.

He was a member of Smithland United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Ralph and Jean of Sioux City; three granddaughters, Katie, Jeanie and Ellen Folkers; two stepsons, Brian and Ralph Bennett, both of Bolingbrook, Illinois; a stepdaughter, Linda McGinnis of Sioux City, eight step-grandchildren; and eight step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Paul; and a sister, Dorothy.
