Smithland, Iowa—Clark Thomas Mead, 81, of Smithland died Tuesday, January 21, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Smithland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Willman Funeral Home of Rodney, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Mead was born September 26, 1915, in rural Smithland, the son of Calvin and Lillie (Parkhill) Mead. He married Helen Daniels on September 20, 1939, in Ida Grove, Iowa. The couple lived near Smithland, where he farmed and later was employed by the Woodbury County Road Department for 10 years before retiring.

Survivors include his wife of Smithland; two sons and their wives, Dick and Carmen of Cherry Valley, California and David and Linda of Smithland; three daughters and their husbands, Sarah and Chuck Ulven and Carol and Don Larson all of Smithland and Patricia and Bob Moon of Aurora, Colo.; 14 grandchildren, Wally, Craig, Wesley, Mike, Scott, Brad and Allen Mead, Kim, John and Tony Van Auken, Mark Larson, Lori Phillips and Clark and Denis Ulven; a step-granddaughter, Tammy Tooke; 20 great grandchildren; two step-brothers, Clifford Coon of Sioux City and Ernie Coon of Bushnell, Ill.; a step-sister, Lucille Denny of Cushing, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Aaron Coon; a grandson; two great-granddaughters; three brothers, Miner, John and Lawrence; and a sister, Gladys Briggs.
