Alfred Edward Weber, 94, Countryside Retirement Home, died Monday, August 26, 1996, at the nursing home following a brief illness.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. James United Methodist Church with Dr. Kenneth Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 9 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Weber was born November 28, 1901, at the family home on the Lum Hollow Stock Farm near Holly Springs, Iowa, the son of Charles Edward and Anna Barbara (Rose) Weber. He was baptized at St. John’s Evangelical Church.

On Feb 7, 1934, he married Joyce Aileen Cox at her parents’ home near Smithland, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed between Holly Springs and Smithland for 38 years before retiring and moving to Sioux City. He remained active in managing the farm for the last 23 years. Mrs. Weber died May 15, 1996.

Mr. Weber joined St John’s Evangelical and Reform Church in 1914. After moving to Sioux City he became an associate member of St. James United Methodist Church. He served as a member of St. John’s Evangelical Church board for many years. He was a member of the Smithland School board, Little Sioux Township ASCA, Golden Age Card Club and Farm Bureau. He was a County Committee member and assessor.

Survivors include a daughter, Retha Lillie and her husband, Dick of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Keith and Pat of Boone, N.C. and Eldon and Jeannie of Ames, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and a sister, Lizzie Hanner of Hornick, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by seven sisters, Ella Goodsell, Edith Claus, Nora Weber, Gertrude Persinger, Ruth Malloy, Elsie Lange and Alice Nirenberg.

Pallbearers will be grandchildren; Dan and Greg Sawin, Brad, Brian and Brent Weber and Michelle Handsaker.

Memorials have been established in his name with Hospice of Siouxland and the Make a Wish Foundation.
