Melvin J. N. Girard, 69, Elk Point, died Saturday (Feb. 3, 1990) at Countryside Retirement Home, after a long illness.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christy Morningside Funeral Home in Sioux City with Dr. Wesley M. Hansen of Billy Sunday Memorial Tabernacle, Sioux City officiating. The body will be cremated and burial will be in Bluff View Cemetery in Vermillion.

Mr. Girard was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Mintonvale, Kan., and was raised and educated in Vermillion. He married Esther Shearon in 1939. He moved to Sioux City in 1957 and to Elk Point in 1979. He farmed in the Vermillion and Elk Point areas and owned two service stations in Sioux City from 1957 to 1974. He started to work for the Elk Point Public School district in 1974, and moved to Elk Point in 1979.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Joelyn and Dan Bursell of Keoukuk, Iowa; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Connie Girard of Sioux City and William and Linda Girard of Jefferson, S.D.; his father, Arthur Girard of Sioux City; two brothers, Kenneth of Sioux City and Adlore of Bean Station, Tenn.; two sisters, Eva Tenting of Elk Point and Dolores Spray of Lake Andes, S.D.; 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
