Manley E. "Slim" Pickens, 63, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Pickens was born April 8, 1939, in Granada, Minn., the son of Ervin M. and Bernice (Ronnau) Pickens. He grew up in South Sioux City, where he attended schools. He later attended the University of South Dakota.

He married Sandra L. "Sandy" Nemesio on Nov. 16, 1962, in Elk Point, S.D. He worked for Zenith Corp., then was an electrician for Morningside Electric. He was a long haul trucker for several years, which included two years of hauling pipe on the Alaskan Pipeline.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. He enjoyed boating, ice fishing, camping and was a big fan of NASCAR, soapbox derby and go-cart racing. He was a friend of Bill W. for 34 years.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy; a daughter and her husband, Shelly and Kevin Arnold of Sioux City; three sons, Edward Pickens, George Pickens and his wife, Tonia and Rick Pickens, all of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren, Joshua, Tony, Wendy, Nicholas, Kristy, Matthew, Amanda, Zach, Chase and Kimberly; two brothers and their wives, Ronnie and Carol Pickens of Englewood, Colo., and Perry and Sandy Pickens of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Dianne and Larry Everhart of Moville, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Kristy Pickens of South Sioux City and Sherry and her husband, Jim Allen, of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Sharon; an infant brother, Terry; a brother, Barry Pickens; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy A. Pickens.

Pallbearers will be George Pickens, Josh Arnold, Tony Arnold, Jim Allen, Marc Nearman and Terry Baker. Honorary pallbearer will be Gerald Feller.
