Mary A. Stevens, 86, of Sioux City died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the Bickford Cottage following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Orthodox Church, with Father Timothy Alikakos officiating. Burial will be in St. Thomas Orthodox Cemetery, Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a Trisagion service at 7 p.m., at Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home.

Mrs. Stevens was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Corumba, Brazil, the daughter of Sam and Alma (Farah) Samore. She came to Sioux City with her family in 1919 and attended Sioux City schools. She graduated from Central High School.

She married George Stevens on Nov. 25, 1937, in Sioux City. She worked for Fantles and Montgomery Wards for many years, retiring in 1975. Mr. Stevens died April 8, 1987, in Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Thomas Orthodox Church and the Ladies Society. She was active in other church activities and was a Sunday School teacher for 25 years.

Survivors include three sons, Bradley Stevens and his wife, Diane, of Clarendon Hills, Ill., Gerald Stevens of Sioux City and Kenneth Stevens and his wife, Carla, of Darien, Ill.; a sister, Tillie Helmers of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Stephanie and her husband, Sal Barbatano, Margaret and her husband, Brian Chung, Tyler Stevens and his wife, Mariam, Roslyn Stevens and Will Stevens; two great-grandchildren, James Barbatano and Sebastian Chung; and many cherished sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and godchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and five brothers, Edward, John, Emil, Bill and Ted Samore.

Pallbearers will be Tyler, Will, Dick and Phil Stevens, Nick Corey and Fred Courey.
