Louis Sulzberger was born August 8, 1841, at Pater Spacie, Bavaria, Germany. He came to America and Woodsfield County, Ohio, at the age of fourteen. He traveled with half-brother, Andrew Dieter, reportedly leaving Germany at a time when the country was once again preparing to go to war, and drafting young men. He had shared an inheritance of thirteen acres at Schoenau, Germany, near Rembauch.

After the presidential elections of 1860 divided the country on the slavery issue, and the controversy erupted to Civil War in 1861, Louis was enlisted into the 116th Regiment of the Ohio Infantry on August 15, 1862. In a diary kept during this period of service, Louis told of the need for the soldiers to feed themselves as they marched. One way was by helping themselves, from the farmer’s hen houses, to eggs which were eaten raw while traveling to the next battlefield.

Louis served until the close of the war, and in June of 1865 was mustered out of the army, receiving $45.25 for clothing allowance, $25.00 Bounty paid, with $75.00 to be paid at a later date.

Louis married Lena Reisser, spelled Ricer in some papers. They were the parents of seven children, Fred, Minnie, Charles, Sophie, Frances, Everett and John.

One of their sons, Charles Christopher Sulsberger came to Woodbury County, in 1885, at the age of seventeen. On May 1890, he was united in marriage to Lucetta ‘Settie’ Reich, who had recently come from Woodsfield County, Ohio. Settie was born October 13, 1869, the first of nine children born to Andrew Reich, born October 14, 1843, died April 23, 1923, and Elizabeth Claus Reich, born July 4, 1849, died February 14, 1920. Elizabeth’s parents were: Henry Claus, Sr, born 1818, died 1904, and Elizabeth Ackerman, born 1819, died 1901.

Charles and Settie were the parents of nine children born in the ‘German City’ area between Smithland and Holly Springs. When their seventh child, Paul, was a small boy, they sold their farm and moved back to Woodsfield County, Ohio, for two years, returning to this county before the birth of their eighth child, Charles. They moved to the Climbing Hill area where they again farmed. The land on which the present-day town sits was once part of their farm. Darrell ‘Whitey’ Sulsberger now owns this farm.

The many Sulsbergers living in this area are all descendants of Charles Sr and Settie. Their children and their families are:

1( Louis, born November 5, 1890, died April 25, 1981. He married Annie Egger. They farmed and lived in the Holly Springs area. Their five children are:

Gary married Sherryl Worrell, divorced, children Gary Jr and Darren.

Carol Ann married Larry Olsen, children Nancy;

Connie married Rene Goodwin, children Dawn, Mark;
Dennis married Robert Brink, children Jennifer, Jermi, Justin;
Donald who married Betty Fowler, the children are:
Robert married Linda Mead, children David, Donald, Jonessa
Eddie, deceased.
Julia who married Lyle Baggs, their one child Kay, married Terrence Bertrand, children Tracy, Toney.
John (deceased) married Iona Hobbs, their two children are:

Terri married Coline, children Terry, Jr, Johanna;

Larry married Nancy, children, Tammy, Jaylee.

2( Clarence, born June 1, 1892, died May 26, 1971. He married Freda Egger. They farmed, living near Holly Springs and later at Climbing Hill. They had seven children:
Vera who married Henry Halverson, their three children are:
Carrie married Pat Sullivan, children Collen and Adam;
Julie married Russel Pekar, children Jennifer, Valerie, Kimberly;
Joan married Tom Biltgen, children Tammy, April;
Edith married Robert Hanley, their three children are:
Nancy married Milton King, children Heather, Lori, Lynn;

Marvin married Alice Faverty, children

Todd married Debora Fox, children Amy, Walter;

Nina who married Mark Herrigs, children Sharleen and Thomas;
Rex married Enid Wedmore, their children are:

Darrell married Norma Kamm, their children are: Dennis and Diane

3( Pauline Sulsberger, born October 3, 1893, died April 15, 1977. She was married to Forrest Clift; there were no children. They farmed in the Holly Springs area.

4( Maggie, born September 5, 1895, died February 7, 1976. She was married to Earl Chilton. They had three children:
Viola married Victor Van Cleave, their three children are:

Mary Lou married Harry Turner, children Kirt, Kris Ann, Kiev, Kyle;

Terry married Sheryl Metcalf, children Tim, Troy, Tamera;

Vicki married Steve Arnold; children Temple, Theran;
Duane married Joan Sheafield, their three children are:

Michael married Carla Fokken, children Hillery, Leslie, Adam;

Mark married Denise Rosenburg, child Heather, Mathew;
Iva married a Warren Petersen, two children:

Gene married Joan Webster, children Ryan, Jeffrey, Linsey;

Debbie.

5( Pearl born July 2, 1899, died June 5, 1981. Pearl married Ralph Steinhoff; they farmed in the Oto area. Their eight children are:

7(Paul, born September 21, 1904, died August 30, 1954. Married Harriet Lowry; they farmed in the Climbing Hill and Holly Springs area. They had one son

8( Charles, born August 30, 1908, married Erma Moss. They farmed in the Climbing Hill area. Their one child is
Sandra who married Charles Holst. Their three children are Elizabeth, deceased; Luke, and Christopher.

9( Lena, born January 31, 1911, died February 11, 1983. Married Robert Bryans, lived in Sioux City. Their three children are
