Charles L and Elizabeth (Bradford) Sturges
By Mary K HarderIn an effort to give our early settlers of Sioux City some recognition, especially those who have no relatives to write the story of their lives here, I am taking the liberty of recounting a few facts about the lives of Charles L Sturges and his wife, Elizabeth Sturges. Charles and his brother, Ernest F operated a wholesale harness, saddle and sporting goods business which was located at 411 Pearl Street. After a number of years, they went into the retail part of this business. This business they operated from 1887 for many years.
Elizabeth Bradford Sturges was born on March 11, 1869, at New London, Iowa. She was community-minded and served as an officer in several of the Women’s organizations in Sioux City. Also she was eligible and joined the Girls of ’68. Mrs Sturges also held several offices n the State Women’s Relief Corps.
The Sturges’ resided at 1616 George Street for many, many years. They had no children. The only relative who resided in Sioux City was a nephew, Charles Marshall, who now is also deceased.
