History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Snyder-McCutcheon
By D Sargent

Noice James Snyder, born November 5, 1837, died March 3, 1903, was born in New York; he married Betsy Ann McCutcheon, born June 20, 1843, died January 22, 1927, on September 28, 1862, at Harrison Valley, Pennsylvania. Noice and Betsy had two children: Etta (Burger) and Phillip, traveled form Pennsylvania by train to Boone, Iowa, where the train service stopped. They then went by ox-team and covered wagon to western Iowa. They came to Woodbury County in 1866 and took up a homestead in West Fork Township. In 1882 they came to Liberty Township and purchased a farm in Section 36 where they lived until death. Seven additional children were born at Salix: Elizabeth Snyder Wilson, Carrie Snyder Klingensmith, Nellie Snyder Belfrage, Lida Snyder Baker, Margaret Snyder Ogg, and John and Evelyn who died in infancy.

Noice James Snyder was a member of the 46th Pennsylvania Regiment, Union Army and was wounded in the right thigh, the bullet passing through the leg. The doctor pulled a clean white silk handkerchief through the wound to clear it of dirt and cloth fibers. He and Betsy were married when he was home following his wounding and between his enlistments. He always walked with a limp. He re-enlisted in the 189th New York Regiment, and was with General Ulysses S Grant, with others on horseback, when General Robert E Lee surrendered his sword to General Grant.
