Carl O and Florence (Coon) Smith

Carl, a resident of Anthon and Correctionville communities for over fifty years, farmed until retiring to Correctionville in 1949. He was born August 8, 1881, at Salina, Kansas. He was the son of William Smith, born August 8, 1838, in Utica, New York. William served in the Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War and later came to Iowa. Carl’s mother, Sarah Jane Ashmore, was born in Arena, Wisconsin, on July 11, 1851. She came with her parents to Fayette County, Iowa, in 1864. Her family line can be traced back to 1837, when they lived in Virginia. Her parents, Carroll Omar and Sarah Anderson Ashmore, were early pioneers in the Correctionville community. William died March 19, 1906, and Sarah Jane, December 29, 1938.

Carl married Florence M Coon, July 3, 1902, at Midway, Iowa. Florence was born February 7, 1886, near Anthon. Her parents were Perry Coon, born February 1857 in Wisconsin, and Emma Jane Long, born October 1860, in Indiana.

Carl and Florence’s children were: sons, Wilbur, Donald, and Raymond; daughters, Mrs. Lila Livermore, Mrs. Mildred Forch, Mrs. Vera Fisher, Mrs. Dorothy Lage, Mrs. Bonnie Lee Phillips and Mrs. Evelyn Jerman.

Carl was a member of the Anthon Church of Christ, having been baptized in May 1953. Florence was also a member.

Carl and Florence were able to celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1952.

Carl passed away August 8, 1953, and Florence on December 28, 1965. They are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery near Anthon.
