Kirk Warren was born June 6, 1957, at Sioux City, Iowa, the third son of William and Mary Utesch. He attended country school for three years (Summit #2, it being the last country school in Woodbury County). He then went to Eastwood Community school, graduating from there in 1975. He was active in football, basketball, track and Future Farmers of America and 4H. He attended South Dakota State University at Brookings, South Dakota, graduating in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science.

In April of 1979 he purchased a farm from the Zelma Edwards Estate, and joined his father, William and brothers, Craig and Brad, in a partnership of farming and feeding cattle known as the Triple U Ranch. Kirk lives in a mobile home on the William Utesch farm.

He is a member of the United Methodist Church at Correctionville and Woodbury County Cattlemen Association. He enjoys hunting, golfing and playing basketball on the city team.
