Charles G Washburn
By Loraine E Washburn

Charles G Washburn was the eldest of the seven generations of the Washburn family who lived in Woodbury County, Iowa. Charles was born about 1815 in New York or Vermont. He was married in the 1830s to Ann Parker. On the 1850 Federal Census of Oldham County, Kentucky he was listed as a wood dealer. Also living in the household were Jesse and Nancy Parker, who were probably the parents of Ann, and Lemuel Parker, age 21, who was probably a brother of Ann, as well as seven of the children of Charles and Ann.

We do not know when Charles and Ann came to Woodbury County, but suspect it was about the same time as their son, Jesse. On the 1880 Federal Census of Sloan Township, Woodbury County, Iowa, Charles was listed as a retired farmer, age 63, born New York. Charles died in 1882 and is buried in Sloan Township cemetery.

Ann was born April 1818 in Kentucky. On the 1900 Federal Census of Willow Township, Woodbury County, Iowa, she was listed as age 82, a widow, with three living children of nine births. Her parents were born in Maryland. The living children in1900 were Jesse, Sarah Elizabeth, and James William.

The children of Charles and Ann were:

1( Jesse, born 1837, died 1919 and is buried in Sloan Township cemetery. Married to Nancy Leach, they were parents of twelve children, all but one of whom were known to have lived in Woodbury County.

3( Sarah Elizabeth, born 1842, Kentucky, died 1917 and is buried at Sloan Township cemetery. Married 1860 in Indiana to William Richards, they came to Woodbury County in 1869. They had five children, and still have descendants in Woodbury County.

4( Edward C, was born about 1843, in Kentucky.

5( Elvira was born about 1845, in Kentucky.
