John Henry Sands

John Henry Sands, one of thirteen children, born November 3, 1878, in Ontario, Canada, farmed eight miles southwest of Anthon. He corresponded with Anna Bayer for some time before Anna came to the United States where they were married, July 6, 1905. Anna was born April 9, 1884, in Austria, Germany, and came to the Anthon area in 1904. This his union were born:
Annie Catherine Sands, born August 3, 1906;
Rudolph Thomas Sands, December 25, 1908
Fred Albert Sands, born April 12, 1910;
Frieda Thera Sands, born January 25, 1912;
Albert Paul Sands, born May 5, 1914;
Walter Harry Sands, born May 1, 1916;
John ‘Oscar’ Sands, born April 11, 1918, died of measles;
Male infant, stillborn, March 3, 1920;
Mary Bernice Sands, born January 25, 1921;
Louis Lee Sands, born March 26, 1923;
John William Sands, born October 27, 1925.
The first three children were born on a Danbury farm that is now owned by Howard Koerner, formerly owned by George Sands. John and Anna moved to a farm eight miles south west of Anthon where the rest of the family was born and raised. This is now owned by Gerald Sands, son of Rudolph Sands.
John Henry lived on this farm until his death, July 6, 1945. Anna move ¼ mile south of this farm until her death, march 25, 1964. The farm is now owned by Fred A Sands.
Annie Catherine Sands, was married June 7, 1931, to Emil Edward Bolte. They farmed in the Anthon-Oto area before moving to Smithland in 1969 where they retired. Emil died 1987, Annie died 1997 , they are buried in Oak Hill cemetery, rural Anthon. They are the parents of three children:
Leon ‘Gene’ Bolte, born February 21, 1932, he died in Wakefield, Nebraska, in about 1997, and is buried there.
Herman John Bolte, born May 24, 1935, lives in Minnesota.
Alwina Anna Bolte, born and died 1934, is buried in Oak Hill cemetery, rural Anthon.
Rudolph Thomas Sands was married September 6, 1933, to Maxine Juanita Servis. They have farmed in the Anthon area. They are the parents of five children:
Gerald Dean Sands, born October 6, 1934;
Harold ‘Jay’ Sands, born May 20, 1939;
Diane Kay Sands, born August 28, 1945, died December 18, 1945;
Steven Wright Sands, born October 10, 1949, died December 9, 1982;
Randy Alan Sands, born October 1, 1955.
Fred Albert Sands, was married April 12, 1912, 1910, to Catherine Margarethe Ketelsen. They are the parents of four children: Christian ‘Chris’ Henry Sands, born January 21, 1938; John Jens Sands, born September 14, 1941; Fred Lyle Sands, born January 31, 1944; Catherine ‘Cathy’ Ann Sands, born February 16, 1947. Fred and Catherine farm in the Anthon-Moville area.
Frieda Thera Sands married Paul Franklin Paulsen, Sr, September 6, 1933. They farm in the Oto, Climbing Hill area. They are parents of four children: Henry William Paulsen, born July 12, 1937; Paul Franklin Paulsen, Jr, born August 9, 1940; Walter Louis Paulsen, born March 18, 1945; Alice Mae Paulsen, born September 20, 1948.
Albert Paul Sands married Frieda Pauline Strackbein. They are parents of seven children:
Harold William Sands, born August 5, 1941;
Richard Frederick Sands, born August 5, 1942;
Irene Pauline Sands, born April 7, 1944, died May 13, 1944 of pneumonia, burial Mid Way cemetery;
Arlene Ida Sands, born July 13, 1945;
Harry A Sands, born April 23, 1947;
George John Sands, born February 6, 1949;
Edna Anna Sands, born March 11, 1954.
They have farmed in the Anthon-Correctionville area.

Walter Harry Sands married Vivian Ellen Hall, October 19, 1941. They are parents of five children:

Roger Walter Sands, born November 29, 1943;

Curtis Duane Sands, born January 18, 1955;

Doris Jeanette Sands, born March 15, 1957;

Dennis Wayne Sands, born December 15, 1958;

Mark Ernest Sands, born December 7, 1962.
They have farmed in the Anthon area and now are farming in Minnesota.

Mary Bernice Sands married Carl ‘Martin’ Ketelsen, November 30, 1942. They are the parents of seven children:
Martin ‘Marty’ ‘Jr’ Ketelsen, born May 27, 1943;
baby boy, stillborn, born and died April 1945;

William ‘Billy’ John Ketelsen, born May 9, 1948;

Donald Duane Ketelsen, born December 2, 1949;

Mary Lou Ketelsen, born March 24, 1956, died January 17, 1968;

Thomas ‘Tom’ Ketelsen, born March 7, 1958, died January 22, 1965;

Larry Jens Ketelsen, born March 31, 1963.
They farmed in the Anthon area. After Martin’s death, Mary moved to Smithland, Iowa.

Louis Lee Sands married Elnora Margaret Kollbaum, January 2, 1947. They are parents of two children: Arlyn Louis Sands, born April 18, 1947; Janice Ann Sands, born April 22, 1950. Louis farmed the Anthon-Moville and Correctionville, Iowa.

John William Sands married Darlene Faye Goettsch, July 19, 1950. They are the parents of four children:

Carol Lynn Sands, born April 24, 1951;

Jeffery ‘Jeff’ Lee Sands, born February 16, 1953;

Wayne Allen Sands, born July 25, 1962;

David John Sands, born March 20, 1964.
They farmed in the Anthon and Moville areas. John is now employed by Woodbury County.
