History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

John D Sands
By Cathy Svendsen

John D Sands was February 1856 in Canada. Both John’s parents were born in Germany and emigrated to Canada. John was united in marriage on February 19, 1878, in Elmira, Ontario, Canada, to Ernestine Handke, daughter of John Gottlieb and Johanna Handke. Ernestine was born September 18, 1857, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

On November 3, 1878, they were blessed with their first child, John Henry Sands; he died July 6, 1945. In 1879 the family left Canada and came to the United States, settling in Pottawattamie County, Iowa. Here they were blessed with six children:
George Sands, born April 17, 1880, died October 15, 1960;
Henry William Sands, born October 1881, died May 13, 1960;

Carl Ferdinand Sands, born March 7, 1883, died November 11, 1946;

Edward David Sands, born August 8, 1884, died May 23, 1932;

Elizabeth Johanna Sands, born January 27, 1885, died March 13, 1966;

Erwin Herman Sands, born October 7, 1888, died March 10, 1963.

After residing there almost twelve years, they moved to Woodbury County in 1890 and made their home on a farm in Miller township. Here they were blessed with six more children:

Ida Katharina Sands, born March 24, 1890, died April 12, 1966;

Albert Sands, born January 11, 1892, died 1937;

Robert Adolph Sands, born July 7, 1893, died May 30, 1893;

Otto Bernard Sands, born January 7, 1895, died December 31, 1961;

Anna Sands, born and died 1896;

Emma Sands, born March 23, 1898, died 1902.

Upon retiring from farming, John and Ernestine moved to Council Bluffs, and it was there that John passed away, February 2, 1927.

Although Ernestine kept house for her brother at Dunlap for a period, she lived most of that time with her children.

Since September of 1938, Ernestine made her home west of Anthon with her eldest son, John, and it was there that her earthly journey was terminated after an illness of two weeks. She died May 22, 1939. They are both buried at the Mid Way Cemetery near Battle Creek, Iowa
