Christian and Kristine (Johansen) Riese
By Ruth Riese Jorgensen & Delores Sitzmann Paulson

Christian Bern Riese was born August 23, 1846, in Ringsted, Denmark. His father was Peder Riese, who was born January 28, 1807 in Ringsted. His mother was Bodil Catherine Jiuil Riese born February 3, 1808 at Vejile, Denmark. In Kjfge Bay, Denmark at least two great naval battles have been fought between Denmark and Sweden. Longfellow’s translation of the Danish national song, depicting one of these battles, is as follows: King Christian stood by the lofty mast in mist and smoke.
His sword was hammering so fast,
Through Gothic helm and brain it passed,
Then sank each hostile bulk and mast, in mist and smoke.
‘Fly’, shouted they, ‘fly he who can,
Who braves of Denmark’s Christian the stroke?’

Longfellow was in a Copenhagen coffeehouse in September 1835. When he heard that stirring air played by some strolling musicians, he later looked up the words by Johannes Evald, in his lyric drama, Fiskerne ‘The Fisherman’, and translated them. Christian V is the Christian of that battle which occurred in 1677. The great hero of the day was the Danish Admiral, Niels Jiuil, who cut to pieces the Swedish fleet, much stronger than his own, while losing not one ship of his own. This is the Niels Jiuil who is the ancestor of Bodil Catherine Jiuil, the wife of Peder Riese, who are the parents of Christian Baron Riese.
