History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Dr Jacob Ressegieu
By Mrs Charlotte Ressegieu

Dr Jacob Ressegieu was born September 2, 1822, in Sharon, New York. He married Lydia Kilts, December 31, 1844. Dr Jacob was the fourth generation descendant of Alexander Resseguie who was a Huguenot refugee from France. He settled in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1709.

Dr Jacob’s father John Ressegieu changed the name to Ressegieu and all his descendants have adopted this change. Dr Jacob and his family left Earlville, New York, and he came to Hannibal, Missouri, in 1867. While in Hannibal, Dr Ressegieu delivered J C Penney who later founded the stores bearing his name. The following year in 1868 they came to Sioux City.

Dr Ressegieu and his family settled on the northwest corner of 9th and Jackson Street. He opened his office at 6th and Pearl Street where he practiced medicine during the early days until his retirement in 1892. Later, they moved to Lakeview, Iowa. He and his wife, Lydia, are buried in Floyd Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.

The doctor’s buggy was restored by his great grandson, Edwin John II and is now in possession of his son, Matt. His medicine cabinet is now used to display a family doll collection owned by his grat, great granddaughter, Connie Cusack.
