History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Richard Michael Ratino
By Richard and Regina Ratino

Richard Michael Ratino, MD, was born at St Luke’s Hospital, Cleveland, Ohio, October 28, 1942, the second of three sons of Anthony and Ida Campo Ratino. His father was born in Italy and moved to Cleveland, Ohio, with his family when he was six years old. Dr. Ratino’s was born in Cleveland Ohio. Dr Ratino attended Murray Hill and St Louis Grade Schools, Cathedral Latin High School and John Carroll University, all located in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Creighton University Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1969.

Dr Ratino lived next door to Regina Ann Wolpert during his last year of medical school. Regina was born at St Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, October 14, 1946, the fourth of nine children of Dr Paul L and Katherine Block Wolpert of Onawa, Iowa. She attended the Onawa Grade Schook, Onawa High School and West Monona High School. She was proud to be a member of the 1964 Girls’ State Basketball Championship team. She was enrolled at Duchesne College of the Sacred Heart in Omaha, for two years and received her degree from Creighton University in 1969. Dr Ratino married Regina, the ‘girl next door’, August 25, 1969, at St John’s Catholic Church, in Onawa, Iowa. As they drove out of Onawa enroute to apartment life in Cleveland, Ohio, the native born Iowa in the ’68 Chevy predicted that they would eventually moved back to Iowa so that any daughters born to their marriage would have the privilege of playing basketball according to the famous xix-girl rules. The Ohioan only chuckled.

Dr Ratino began his internship and residency program in obstetrics and gynecology at St Luke’s Hospital. During this time Regina attended Case Western Reserve Law School and received her J D degree. Upon completion of his training, Dr Ratino set up practice for two years in Cleveland, Ohio.

As had been predicted, the Ratino family moved to 3151 Norman Drive, Sioux City, in 1975, where Dr Ratino set up a medical practice with Dr Leonard Boggs. Dr Ratino is a member of the Woodbury County Medical Society, the Iowa Medic al Society, the AMA, the ACOG, and is on the staff of Marian Health Center and St Luke’s Hospital. He is also on the board of the Concert Course.

The Ratinos have four children: Christine Marie, born December 15, 1970, in Cleveland, Ohio, at St Luke’s Hospital; twins (diagnosed as such on April Fools Day), Thomas Michael and Theresa Ann, born June 6, 1975, in Cleveland; and Timothy Paul, born July 19, 1980, at Marian Health Center, Sioux City. Also in the family is a poodle named Snowflake.

The Ratinos are members of St Michael’s Parish and the children attend St Michael’s Catholic School. They enjoy life in the heart of the Midwest and are pleased to have several family members living nearby.
