John Peterson was born March 26, 1865, at Trondhyen, Norway. He died August 23, 1916, and is buried at Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa. He was married September 30, 1890, to Mary Katheryn ‘Kate’ Chilton, who was born August 7, 1872, at Avoca, Wisconsin. She died July 30, 1955, and is buried at Smithland. When they were first married they farmed near Hornick and during the rest of their married life always farmed around the Oto and Smithland area. After John’s death, Kate and the boys continued farming.

They had a family of twelve children, all born in Woodbury County.

Harry, born 1891, died in infancy.

Lester H, June 24, 1892 to February 7, 1919, never married. He was killed by a train at Ticonic, Iowa.

Sylvia L, November 13, 1894 to March 29, 1971, married Thomas G McLarty, November 30, 1887 to January 25, 1970. They had five children: Aleita McLarty Carbaugh, Gladys McLarty McKight, Vernon, Margorie McLarty Felsing, and Orville.

Jay Peterson, July 15, 1895 to July 31, 1963, on January 10, 1917, was married to Alma Cook, 1891 to 1956. They had two children, Willis and Virginia Peterson Davis. Jay married Shirley Slentz, September 10, 1958.

John Peterson, January 21, 1898 to June 10, 1945, was a farmer, never married.

Nettie Peterson, born October 11, 1899, on February 25, 1925 was married to Alfred Carlson, born December 12, 1899. They had five children: Deloras Carlson Townley, Erma Carlson Sentz, Donald, Darrel and Lynn.

LeRoy Albert ‘Pat’ Peterson, August 9, 1902 to January 2, 1967, on February 15, 1928, married Ellen C Olson, born November 29, 1901. They had two children: Dorothy Peterson Sargent and Betty Peterson DeGeest. Edith Peterson, born October 27, 1905, on March 2, 1930, married William Erlandson. They had one daughter, Mary Ann Erlandson Dunn. Carl Peterson, born April 2, 1907, married Helen Hjort Scott. She had two children, Bonnie and Richard. Helen May Peterson, born April 15, 1909, on August 27, 1928, was married to Paul Hayden; he died September 14, 1976. They had two children, Iva Mae and Gerald. Clifford M Peterson, July 3, 1912 to October 6, 1940, on October 26, 1932, married Luella Dawdy. They had three children, Doris Peterson Smith, Merlin, and Duane. Clifford was killed in a machinery accident near Hornick. Leonard Peterson was married to Neta Slentz, born December 11, 1916. They have one child, Sandra Peterson Parker.
