History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

The following is a direct chronological lineage of Mary Cleao Parks. Sonya Hoppe obtained this information from her a month before she passed away; she was of sound mind. The additional dates were obtained from tombstones in Woodbury County.

Elizabeth Kaughman, born in 1819, in New England or Pennsylvania, died 1897, married an Ortman who was killed in the Civil War of the United States. To this union were born:
Mary Catherine, Fairfield County, Ohio, September 3, 1851, died at Remsen, Iowa, February 26, 1921;
John who died in the Civil War;
George who died in Indiana;
Ollie who died in Indiana;
Lizzie who died in Indiana;
Will who died in Kansas.

The story goes that President Lincoln made a stop at the Ortman home to tell the loss of two sons in the Civil War. Black measles was also a killer at that time.

Isaac James Parks married Mary Catherine Ortman. To this union the following children were born:
Will Ulysses, born at Dexter, Iowa, on October 30, 1870, died at Portland, Oregon, September 1921;
Olive (married Jerman) born at Dexter, Iowa, on August 26, 1872, died about 1940, in Florida;
Josephine Ornettie (married Watson) born at Dexter, on November 27, 1874, died at Correctionville, Iowa on January 20, 1923;
Mae (married Warn) born at Dexter, on May 21, 1877, died at Battle Creek, Iowa, on June 1, 1957;
Lonnie born in Shelby County, Iowa, in 1879, died in Shelby County, in 1880 (stones at Danbury cemetery);
Lottie Luella (married Stamper) born in Shelby County, 1880, died in Correctionville, Iowa, on January 12, 1911;
Arthur James born in Shelby County, in August 1883, died at LeMars, Iowa;
Cora Ellen (married Leach, then married Cardwell) born in Shelby County, on August 24, 1886, died in 1965;
Stella A born in Shelby County, on July 20, 1887, died at Danbury, on March 16, 1891;
Arval C born at Danbury, on September 27, 1890, died at Danbury, on December 8, 1890;
Harrison H born at Danbury, on September 21, 1889, died at Danbury, on September 21, 1889;
Mary Cleao born at Danbury, on January 12, 1892, died at Correctionville, Iowa, on July 28, 1960;
Addie Pearl (married Wright) born at Danbury, Iowa, on January 24, 1894, died at Correctionville, on January 10, 1921;
Alice Gertrude, (married Cohrt) born at Danbury, on October 1, 1897, died at Los Angeles, California, on February 7, 1938.

Mary Cleao worked in a bakery for four years before she was married.

Isaac James Parks worked as a farmer, shelled corn, threshed grain. He also did a lot of preaching, although he was not an ordained minister.
