Robert George Padel was born25 October 1919 at Bronson, Iowa, son of Herman Reed, born 15 June 1884, and Caroline Maude (Onstot) Padel, born 7 September 1884. (see biographies of Herman and Reed Padel.) This very snowy cold October day was a very busy day for the Doctor; first he came to the Padel’s and Bob was born at ten in the morning. From the Padel’s he was called to the Ellis Howard farm and Wayne Howard was born within a few hours.

Bob grew up on the farm northeast of Bronson; he attended Floyd Independent School nearby the home (the only country school house in Floyd township). This schoolhouse was built by his grandfather, Jacob Onstot. In 1935 he moved with his parents and two sisters to Section 10, Banner township at Lawton, Iowa. He attended school at Lawton and farmed with his father.

Robert and Darlene were married 27 June 1943 and 2621 Court Street at the home of Bob’s sister, Mrs. Joyce Cox. To this marriage two children were born: Clarence Wayne, born and died 4 November 1945, buried at Graceland Park Cemetery; and Raymond Keith, born February 1949, both born in Sioux City, Iowa.

Darlene Evelyn (Thorne) Padel was born 7 April 1921 near Emerson, Nebraska, daughter of Alfred and Elizabeth J (Eriksen) Thorne. (Chris Eriksen and Alfred Thorne biographies in 1983 Dakota County Nebraska History.)

Darlene was raised on farms at Hubbard and Homer, Nebraska; she attended school at Hubbard, Jensen Country School, and graduated from South Sioux City High School. She went to work at Aalf-Baker Mfg. in Sioux City.

In 1969 when the farm they were farming was sold, they moved to Sioux City as a heavy equipment operator. Darlene was manager of several Goodwill stores and is now semi-retired and is still working part-time at the Main Store. Bob is now working part-time for the Sioux City Night Patrol.

Robert is a Past Master of Trial Lodge No.532 AF&AM, of Moville, Iowa. Darlene and Robert are Past Matron and Past Patron of Arlington Chapter No. 428 Order of Eastern Star of Moville, and are now members of Morningside Chapter No. 502 Sioux City, Iowa.

Raymond Keith, son of Robert and Darlene was raised on a farm and attended school at Lawton, Iowa. Raymond played trombone in the Lawton-Bronson High School Band and sang in church and school activities. After high school he went to Western Iowa Tech., studying meat cutting.

Raymond married Janice Rae Husk, June 13, 1969, at the Methodist Church in Maskell, Nebraska. Janice was born 17 September 1949 in Sioux City, daughter of Raymond Dean, born 28 December 1921, and Helen Verdelle (Whitsett) Husk, born 17 October 1924. She attended school at Wynot and graduated from Obert-Maskell High School.

Raymond enlisted in the Army and left June 30, 1969, for Ft. Lewis, Washington. He served in Vietnam in A Co. 58th Signal Battalion. Ray and Janice’s first son, James Robert, was born 12 September 1970, in Sioux City while Ray was overseas. He came home Christmas Eve Day, 1970, and returned to Ft. Lewis, where Janice joined him. Gerald Raymond was born 22 February 1972, at Ft. Lewis, Tacoma, Washington. Ray was honorably discharged 8 March 1972. They moved to Ponca, Nebraska, where they lived one year.

Ray returned to work at Iowa Beef Processors Inc., at Dakota City, Nebraska, where he worked while in high school.

Their daughter, Jana Rae, was born 8 November 1976, in Sioux City.

Ray re-enlisted in the Army in March of 1982; he is now Spec. 5, in the 14th Battalion 200 Co., stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Ray works with Radio Avionics Maintenance.

Jim is in eighth grade, Jerry in the sixth grade, Jana in the first grade. The boys have been in Scouts and now play in the school band; Jim plays saxophone and Jerry plays trumpet.

The Padels are of Presbyterian Faith.
