By Darlene (Thorne) Padel

Herman Otto Reed Padel was born 15 June 1884, in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, to Herman A and Luella E (Eberly) Padel. Reed attended school in Sioux City and at the age thirteen he went to work on the farm for George Willer. He also worked for Mr. Clark and Jacob Onstot.

On 16 November 1905, Reed married Caroline Maude Onstot, daughter of Jacob and Catharine (Marquart) Onstot, at the Onstot farm near Bronson, Woodbury County, Iowa.

After their marriage, he worked o the farm for George Elliott, at a packing house in Sioux City, and at the lumber yard, in Bronson, for Howard Onstot. But he soon went to farming for himself north and east of Bronson on the Howard Onstot farm, which they purchased from him approximately 1917.

Five children were born to this marriage, all born in Bronson, Woodbury County.

Jetta Beatrice was born 13 April 1906, married (1) Earl Leroy Hatch, son of Olin L and Orpha (Barden) Hatch. Children: Roland Lyle, Alvin Leonard, Mable Ruth, Orpha Arlene. On 13 April 1954, Jetta married (2) Guy Daniel Rhodenbaugh, son of Douglas and Mary Margaret (Whitcome) Rhodenbaugh, at Reno, Washoe County, Nevada.

Reed and Maude were members of the Ursinus Church as young people and later members of Lawton Community Church. Maude was a member of the U.T.D. Club at Lawton. Reed played Trombone and Baritone in the Bronson Band-at home Maude would accompany him on the piano; many Sundays were spent in this way. Reed was assessor for nine years in Floyd Township, on the School Board of Floyd Township, and Woodbury County Farm Bureau. Reed was well known and active in Community work. He and Maude both enjoyed fishing and family gatherings.

Maude and Reed were honored with a family and friends gathering on their 25th anniversary at the farm home at Bronson, which during the depression years of 1930’s was lost. Reed, still wanting to continue farming, moved his family to Section 10 of Banner Township, north and east of Lawton. Their 50th anniversary was at the Lawton Community Church with a large gathering of family, friends and neighbors, with more celebration at the farm home in the evening with close friends and family.

Reed spent his last years on the farm at Lawton and died 5 April 1957. His son, Robert, continued farming this same farm.

Caroline Maude moved into an apartment at Moville in 1957 for several years, and later moved to Sioux City to be near the children. She passed away there after 6 months of illness, 9 May 1977, at the age of ninety-two.
