Clifford Huot
By Virginia Huot

Clifford Cyril Huot was born March 5, 1927, in Salix, son of Raoul Huot and Maria Hubert Huot. He was raised on a farm southeast of Salix attending St Joseph’s School.

Clifford worked at a fish cannery in Pelican City, Alaska, for three months, arriving there by a fishing boat from Seattle, Washington, to Juneau, Alaska. He then attended Diesel School in Chicago, Illinois, from 1950 to 1953.

Returning to Iowa, he purchased a bulldozer and cleared a thousand acres of trees and also helped his widowed mother with the farming. In 1963 he started full-time farming. In 1965, in partnership with Jack Van Cleave, he built a thirty foot houseboat with a V-8 Chrysler engine. Both families enjoyed the boat on Snyder’s Bend for three years.

Clifford married Virginia ‘Pat’ Moore, of Sioux City, November 7, 1959. Pat was born June 15, 1931, in Sioux City, the daughter of Clayton and Frances Moore. She attended Sioux City schools. She is presently a 4H leader and active in church and community affairs. Virginia has been a member of an International Barbershop Sweet Adeline’s Group, called Siouxland Sounds, for six years.

Clifford and Pat have one son, Hubert Raoul, presently in Basic Training at Great Lakes, Naval Station in Illinois, and five daughters. Kathleen, a graduate of Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa, is now attending Kansas University working on a Masters Degree. Julie lives in Salix, works at IBP, and has a son, Jeffery Alan, born in 1982. Renee is a senior at Heelan High School in Sioux City. Christine is a fifth grade student at Westwood. DeAnn, infant daughter, passed away in 1962, at eight days.

Virginia brought to their married two sons, Richard Wayne and Keith Albert, whom Clifford adopted. Richard served in the Army in Panama, and Vietnam four years. Keith attended the Iowa School for the Deaf and now lives and works in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

In 1978, the Huots purchased the Skidmore home and moved to Brown’s Lake area.
