Hiram McClaran, son of Samuel McClaran and Mary Cline, was born August 7, 1837 in Holmes, County, Ohio. He was a Civil War veteran, enlisting October 23, 1861 in Company I, 4th Iowa Cavalry at Panora, Iowa. He was discharged December 19, 1863, but re-enlisted the same day and received his final discharge August 8, 1865, at Atlanta, Georgia. He served under General Sherman and General Grant. He died in the Old Soldier’s Home at Marshalltown, Iowa, on December 3, 1917. He married Sarah Smith, on January 21, 1866, in Guthrie County, Iowa. She was born March 6, 1848, in Clark County, Ohio. According to the 1880 census, they were residents of Woodbury County. They lived on a farm north of Climbing Hill. Their seven children were: William, born June 28, 1867; Everett, born April 6, 1869, died September 11, 1958; Harry, born February 21, 1871; Floyd, born November 29, 1873; Clyde, born November 25, 1875; Edward, born April 25 1879; and Ella, born April 25, 1879.

Everett McClaran was married to Myrtle Andrews, March 30, 1909, in Sioux City. They lived in Woodbury County a while and then moved to Cement, Oklahoma. Their five children were: George, born December 19, 1904; Maurice, born August 17, 1906; Max, born June 19, 1908; Ida, born April 22, 1910; and Dorothy, born May 28, 1913. George, Maurice and Max were born in Climbing Hill; Ida and Dorothy in Cement, Oklahoma. Both Everett and Myrtle died in Oklahoma.

Harry McClaran was married to Annie Mary Kelsey, March 27, 1907, and they lived on a farm north of Holly Springs until their deaths. Children born to this union were: Clifford, born January 13, 1908; Virginia, born April 1, 1909; Reginald, born January 23, 1917; and Clyde, born February, 1919. Virginia, the only child still living, was married t Carl Callaghan, February 11, 1928 and has lived on a farm near Smithland. They had two children: Betty and Fern.

Floyd McClaran married Effie Tennis, date unknown. They had three children: Donald, born June 2, 1908; Kenneth, born February 14, 1911; and Richard, born June 24, 1914. Donald never married and still lives in Climbing Hill. Kenneth died in 1969. Very little is known of his family. Richard was married and lived in Denver.

Clyde McClaran was married to Nannie Lehman Goodrich, on March 21, 1903. Their four children were: Marie, born December 4, 1903, in Scotland, South Dakota; John Charles, born March 5, 1905, in Yankton, South Dakota; Gladys, born September 18, 1906, in Sioux City; and Edward, born December 10, 1908, in Sioux City. They both moved to Petaluma, California, where both Clyde and Nannie died.

Edward was married to May Clark, born September 23, 1880, on October 29, 1905. Their five children were: Lauren, born December 25, 1906; Muriel, born September 11, 1908; Beulah, born October 21, 1910; Nell, born August 7, 1915; and Ruth, born September 9, 1918. Lauren, Muriel and Beulah were born in Climbing Hill, Nell and Ruth in Piero, Iowa. They lived for a while in Climbing Hill, then on a farm at Piero, between Oto and Climbing Hill. Later they moved to a farm west of Correctionville and when they retired, they moved to Moville where both Edward and May died. Lauren was married to Marion Green in 1932. They lived in Omaha and South America. Their children were Marilyn and Dorothy. Muriel taught in a rural school until she went to Iowa State where she met and married Don Needham, June 14, 1935. They had three children, Susan, Sarah and Donald. They lived in Chicago and North Carolina. Beulah taught in rural schools and then in Salix for several years. She married Burton Warrimer in April, 1943, and they have lived on a farm at Schaller, Iowa, ever since. They have two children, James and Nancy. Nell McClaran married Roscoe Riser in 1938 and has lived on a farm at Moville ever since. Nell had taught in rural schools and later at Lawton, until she retired. Their children are Nick, David, Steven, and Sally. Ruth taught in rural schools, and in Salix, then married Alvin Hall, May 28, 1943. They lived in Climbing Hill for a while where they had a grocery store. Then they moved to Lawton where Alvin died. They had four children: Julie, Linn, Anne, and Lauren. After Alvin’s death, Ruth taught in Sioux City and raised her family. She was retired and still lives in Lawton.

Ella married Dr Jacob Bild, on October 26, 1905, at Climbing Hill. Their three children were: Emily, born July 12, 1906; Charles, born August 21, 1908; and Elmer J (date of birth unknown). Emily married Earl Rodman and has lived in Nebraska. Charles married Helen Albertson, April 22, 1935. He graduated from Iowa State College as a veterinarian and practiced in Florida, married Jean Maison, July 15, 1953, and has lived in eastern Iowa.

Clarence McClaran, son of Peter McClaran and Sarah Truax, was born January 20, 1882, in Guthrie County. His parents both died when he was quite young and he came to Climbing Hill to live with his Uncle Hiram and family. Clarence went to National Business School in Sioux City. He married Lydie Steinhauer, September 19, 1906, in Sioux City. They lived in Climbing Hill for some time, where he had a general merchandise store. Then they moved to a farm in Piero for five years, then they returned to Climbing Hill. There Clarence became cashier of Climbing Hill Savings Bank which was established in 1917, a position he retained until he retired in 1946. Their children are: Leona, born July 9, 1909, Marvin, born February 23, 1912, Lydia, born August 9, 1915, and Bethene, born March 5, 1917. Bethene passed away very suddenly, July 19, 1968. Leona and Marvin were born in Climbing Hill, Lydia and Bethene in Piero.

Leona never married. She worked in Climbing Hill Bank for several years. Later she taught school in Salix. In 1940 when started work on the Selective Service Draft Board in Sioux City until it closed in 1947. She then went to California and worked at Fort Mason in San Francisco until she retired and moved to Santa Cruz, California.

Marvin worked in the bank at Climbing Hill, and after attending Iowa State University he married Ruth Jones, June 10, 1939. He was a CPA and worked in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, then moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where he had a lumber yard. Their children are Craig and Nancy, both born in Waterloo, Iowa.

Lydia married Earl Birdsell, July 29, 1938, at Sioux City. For a while they live in Sioux City where Earl was a salesman for Proctor and Gamble. Then they moved to a Storm Lake, Iowa, where they had a furniture store. Their children are Vicki, Gary and Duane. Bethene married Bernard Forney on September 10, 1938. They lived on a farm north of Climbing Hill, and then moved to a farm north of Holly Springs. Their children are Sandra, Larry, Linda, Sherry and Pamela. Sandra married Earl Welch and lives on a farm out of Denison. The rest all reside in Woodbury County.

For any interested in family research, Climbing Hill Cemetery has many tombstones engraved with the name McClaran.
