Dale and Darlene were born near Cushing, spent their childhood on farms near there, and have farmed south of Cushing ever since.

Dale Burdett Juelfs was born on a farm four miles south of Cushing on May 22, 1927. His parents were Anson ‘Hans’, 1902-1972, and Della Walrod, 1905-, Juelfs, who farmed there until they retired to Cushing. Dale was the oldest son in a family of seven. His sisters are Darlene and Dixie; his brothers are Duane, Delbert, Don and Dick.

Dale attended Cushing Consolidated School and graduated in 1945. He enjoyed baseball and basketball and played with area teams several years. He later coached Junior Legion baseball teams and other youth teams.

Darlene grew up on the farm of her parents, William ‘Bill’, 1896-1956, and ‘Minnie’ Volkert Grell, 1896-1957, four miles northwest of Cushing. She was born April 30, 1927, and her older brothers, Arnold and Reynold, were twins. She walked or rode a pony two miles to rural schools for eight years then graduated form Cushing Consolidated High School in 1944. She attended summer session at Western Union College (now Westmar) at LeMars, and taught rural school north of Cushing for three years.

Dale entered the Army after graduation, serving form 1945 to 1947. He completed paratrooper training at Fort Benning, Georgia, then served in Nurnberg, Germany, during the post-war trials of World War II.

Dale and Darlene were married June 29, 1947, in St John Lutheran Church in Cushing where they are members. They have four daughters and two sons: Sharon, Connie, Lana, Lon, Hope, and Jay.

They started farming on the Frank Croxell farm (three miles southwest of Cushing, which they bought later, and are presently farming there.

Sharon was born July 14, 1948. She married Lon C Wilde, an operator in construction, and they live on their acreage north of Cushing. She is office manager at Midwest Testing and Engineering in Sioux City. Their children are: Dawn, 1968, Donya, 1972, and Kirk, 1974.

Connie was born December 14, 1949. She married Gary Jenkins who is with the State Bank of Schaller, Iowa, where they live. Connie is an elementary teacher. Their children are: Scott, 1972, and Valerie, 1974.

Lana was born July 9, 1951, and is a U S Postal Service employee in Correctionville, where she and Jim live. She married James ‘Jim’ Cunningham, who is a Deputy in the Woodbury County Sheriff’s Department. Their sons are: James ‘Jeff’, 1972, and Jon, 1977.

Lon was born June 18, 1952, and owns and operates Lon’s Service on Main Street in Cushing. His children are: Jenifer, 1973, and Andrew ‘Andy’, 1974.

Hope was born November 13, 1956, and is employed in the loan department at Home Federal Savings and Loan in Sioux City. She married Darrell Jeffrey, a long-distance driver, and their sons are: Brant, 1977, and Blake, 1981.

Jay was born September 11, 1969, and attends Eastwood High School (of Cushing and Correctionville) where he participates in sports and music. He is a member of Rock-Kee-Union 4H Club.

Darlene has been active in local organizations and taught Jr. Lutherans. For over thirty years, Dale has been both a Rock Township trustee and a Woodbury County A.S.C. committeeman, doing land measuring for farmers. He was also a Cushing School Board member, and is a member of American Legion Post 624.
