John and Eva Trometer Mook
By Betty Mook Winterringer

John Mook was born October 19, 1838 in Alsace Lorraine, Germany. His marriage took place in Germany to Eva Trometer. She was born on May 13, 1843 in Alsace Lorraine also. Her parents were Andreas Trometer and Katharina Sizz. Andreas was born June 28, 1812 at Winzenbach in Alsace Lorraine, Germany, he died in Liberty Township, Monona County, Iowa, on February 8, 1891, and is buried at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lincoln Township. His wife Katharina Sizz was born February 22, 1815 at Niederroedern, Alsace Lorraine, Germany and died July 24, 1895 in Plymouth County, Iowa. She is buried beside her husband in Lincoln, Township.

John Mook and Eva Trometer came to the United States on March 20, 1865 and settled in Illinois; they moved to Buchanan County, Iowa between 1868 and 1871. John became a Naturalized U S citizen on October 7, 1890 at Independence, Iowa. Through research it was learned that the name was apparently changed from Moog to Mook after the family arrived in the United States. It was changed sometime between 1893 and 1917, as Eva’s tombstone in 1893 lists the name as Moog and in 1917 on John’s stone the name is listed as Mook. The reason for the change is not known.

John and Eva farmed in the Buchanan County area and farming was his main occupation. He also worked in a cheese factory in the Quaspuaton and Rowley, Iowa area. They were farming in Plymouth County, Iowa in 1893 when Eva died on May 13, 1893. She is buried beside her parents of Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, east of Hinton, Iowa.

John Mook was described by a granddaughter as being tall and slim, a very kind and gentle man. He never learned to speak English. He died on May 9, 1917 in Plymouth County and is buried at Merrill, Iowa.

John Mook and Eva Trometer were the parents of six children: George, Carrie, Fred, Magdalena, John and Andrew.
