History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Danny and LaNora Morey
By Roxanne L Morey

On January 3, 1952, Edwin and Willys (Hopkins) Morey had a son, Danny Lee. Danny was the third addition to the family; he has an older sister, Marilynn Jeanenne, and older brother, Jimmy Alan, and a younger sister, Nancy Ruth.

Danny was born near Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and in a few years the family moved to a farm in Westfield, Iowa, for a year or two. They then moved to West 2nd Street in Sioux City, Iowa, and then to McCook Lake, South Dakota. Later they lived on Correctionville Road for about a year before moving to a duplex at 1308 Floyd Boulevard in Sioux City. This was where Danny spent his teenage years.

In 1960 Danny joined the Iowa National Guard for four years. He took his basic training in New Jersey. In 1961 he met LaNora Lorraine Hicks, the daughter of Leslie Hicks and Ella (Lowther). She was born May 21, 1944 in Sioux City, and has four brothers: Ronald Gallup, Romain, Eugene and Larry Hicks. Her family lived in many different places surrounding th Sioux City area. Ella later married Arnold Schulz and they had two son, Lanny Dean and James Wayne.

Before her marriage, LaNora worked as a kitchen aide at St Vincent Hospital. When she met Danny, she was employed at Aalfs Manufacturing Company.

Danny and LaNora were married on October 27, 1962 in Sioux City, at the Church of All Nations. They live in a duplex at 1306 Floyd Boulevard.

In 1964 LaNora began working at Zenith Radio Corporation, and was there until 1976, when she began housecleaning for other people. In 1979 she started working at Briar Cliff College in the Printing Department. In 1965 Danny started working at Gates Rubber Company, and he has been there since.

In the spring of 1968, Danny’s parents saw an ad in the paper about an acreage with a trailer house for sale. The land was where Belle Vista School used to be. After looking at the land and liking it, Danny bought it and his parents and Nancy lived there. During this time, Danny and LaNora continued to live in Sioux City.

On June 20, 1969, Danny and LaNora’s first child, Rosanne Iva, was born. Roxanne was named after her Great Grandma Iva Hopkins and her Grandma Willys Iva Morey. She was Iva Hopkin’s sixty-third great grandchild.

1n 1970 his parents decided to buy nine acres southeast of Danny’s land. They built a small house and moved in. Danny and LaNora then moved onto their land.

In 1972 Roxanne was very excited about getting a baby sister, Tamara Kaye, on March 20. Tamara’s Grandpa Morey immediately nicknamed her Spring.

In spring of 1973 Danny had a basement dug for a new trailer house. Then he laid blocks for the walls and a frame. That summer they moved in a new trailer onto the basement.

The girls both attended Westfield School. In 1982 Westfield consolidated with Akron and they were very happy.

Danny enjoys playing guitar and singing to country-western songs. Roxanne and Tamara enjoy playing the piano and singing along with their dad.

Danny and his father had many enjoyable memories building the acreages. After the death of his father, Danny has been a great help to his mother.
