History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Meyer Family
By Emma M Barth

My grandmother and Grandpa Meyer came over in their younger days. I do not know the exact date. Grandpa Meyer came from Germany, and Grandma (Peterson) Meyer came from Denmark. They lived in Davenport, Iowa. My Grandfather Meyer was a shoemaker. They say his shop is not there anymore, but there is a large apartment building on the corner where his shop was located.

Their children were Ernest Meyer, our father, who came to the Kingsley-Pierson area and married Doris Bauer, our mother; and Adolph Meyer, who also came to Iowa and lived in Council Bluffs for many years. His wife, the former Sophia (Hietman) Meyer was a cousin to my mother. Then there was Aunt Emma (Meyer) Sommer and Aunt Annie (Meyer) Pries. I never saw my (Meyer) grandparents, as in those days we could not get around like now days. The only way was by train, but my parents lived in Woodbury County for several years.

My Grandmother Bauer worked in the hotel in Lawton in 1900 – 1902. The hotel was run by a friend, a Mrs Cook.

My parents are buried in the Banner Township Cemetery at Lawton. My parents passed away when we were youngsters, and my Grandma Bauer raised us on the farm five and one-help miles north of Lawton.
